Critical Literacy II English

What is Critical Literacy - Critical Literacy is when you apply Critical thinking to a literacy topic
- Critical Literacy is when you question how and why a text was made
- Critical thinking is a skill that we will be practising throughout the year

Define these words
Bias - Bias is where you favour something over something
Source - A place where we get information from
Credible - You can be believed/Trusted on what you give
Authority - Authority to have power over something
Reliable - You can be trusted to do something
Perspective - Your view on someone or something (Your point of view)
Agenda - A agenda is something you are planning to give a purpose, so planning something and giving it a purpose
Manipulate - to control something or someone to your liking



Extension Task  - Have a go at putting each of these words into a sentence to show you understand how to use them.

Text - This text has very little information, so I'll need to find something else for my research.
Construction - The construction of this text was mostly just about facts that I already knew.
Representation - The text has a very strong grip on the representation of the topic
stereotype - the stereotype that blondes are more intelligent than brunettes is really growing old.
Bias - This persons opinion is very biased towards this subject.
Inclusion - Inclusion... It means including someone right?
Exclusion - In this movie, all the main characters friends excluded the main character from their activities.
Masculine - The main character acts very Masculine
Feminine - My best friend seems to have a very feminine figure.

How are the elders constructed in this text?In the video, there is a particular stereotype at the start which shows that Elders mostly just sit and around wait for people to come to them. the rest of the song breaks that stereotype showing the elders as energetic people who can look after themselves and don't need others looking after them.

How are adults constructed in this text?
Females are constructed as women who are meant to stay inside and be elegantly dressed while doing the housework, while the men do the outside housework

What kind of social reality does this text portray?That life only mattered on getting the job done, and looking handsome or pretty and doing their job right, which also gives a stereotype of men being outside in the garden getting dirty and women staying inside staying clean from the dirt and doing the house chores.

Draws from History, Finds examples of props and setting that actually existed in the time period

How does this text construct a version of realityThis is the 70's America's reality back then, when women couldn't act out of line and couldn't get dirty, and had to always be dressed and pretty before starting the day.

We can shift the view from men being positive to being put down or mean, we can shift the view in society and cultural values - there is more to life than a house, dog and kids

What different interpretation of the text are possibleThat she enjoyed doing housework all day long for a man just so she could satisfy him

How are adults constructed in this text?In this Text, Females are constructed as always being second to men while men are constructed to being first and better than women.

What kind of social reality does this text portray?That 30yrs later from the first, Women and Men can have the same job and the same opportunities

We can shift the view from men being positive to being put down or mean, we can shift the view in society and cultural values - that you shouldn't judge someone's intelligence based on their hair colour nor attitude.

Is this text fair?
The text is biased towards the young Pi/Maori's and Caucasian males and the stereotype of how they like to go out and get drunk with their friends. (So no it's not as it's using just males and Pi/Maori males)

How are teenagers or young adults constructed in this text?
Young male adults who are shown to have no resistant towards wanting to get drunk, and a stereotype that young men are responsible.

how does the text present age, gender or cultural groups?
It creates a stereotype for Pi/Maori and Caucasian that shows that these specific type of young men between 16 & up cannot hold their self back on drinking, doing this their stereotyping Pi/Maoris and saying that this is what Pi and Maoris do all the time.

Why is the text written this way?
Not to do drunk driving when you know you're behind the wheel of the car and to also shock the viewer.

Synopsis
The video starts off with 4 mates going to a bar and getting drunk, 1 of the 4 was meant to stay sober as he was the one driving, but snuck off and got drunk knowing well enough he was behind the wheel and ended up crashing the car and killing one of his friends.

Is this text fair
Text is based on young Maori/Pi and how they Like to hang with their friends and party all night long and get drunk and not acknowledge the fact that their driving later on.

It creates a stereotype for Pi/Maori and Caucasian that shows that these specific type of young men between 16 & up cannot hold their self back on drinking, doing this their stereotyping Pi/Maoris and saying that this is what Pi and Maoris do all the time.

Why is the text written this way?
To show you that it's better to notice things when sober so you can stop a friend from making a big mistake and getting themself killed because they were drunk driving

SynopsisThe video starts off with a guy in the corner with a beer thinking in his head about the worse case scenarios of what could happen if his friend drove while drunk and decided to tell his friend not to drive tonight as he was too wasted to drive.
