Pathos, Logos, Ethos II English

Pathos is a form of persuasive writing that is used to evoke the feelings of the audience. In other words Pathos is used throughout stories to make the audience feel something and give the text more meaning to the viewer, this can either be sad or happy. An example of Pathos - "She has THE POWER to change the world. You have THE POWER to help her do it." - Add

Logos is used to persuade someone by using facts. In other words Logos is where you give an example of something and you reason with the audience as to why that statement is true or false with evidence to back it up. An example of this "Harry Potter - "You've made a mistake I can't be a wizard. I mean I'm just Harry, just Harry." "Hagrid - " Well, just Harry, did you ever make anything happen? Anything you couldn't explain, when you were angry or scared?" - Harry potter

Ethos is used in a text to convince the audience. Another way to put it is that Ethos is used to convince people by having someone of authority or a text tell you about something that shows truth and has credibility to what it's telling you. The person of authority could be a CEO or a Celebrity. An example of this " I learned the real lessons about how America works from experience. When I was 37, I helped start a small company. My Partners and I had been working for a company that was in the business of helping other businesses. So some of us had this idea that if we really believed our advice was helping companies, we should invest in companies. We should bet on ourselves and on our advice. So we started a new business called Bain Capital... That business we started with 10 people had now grown into a great American success story. Some of the companies we helped start are names you know. An office supply company called Staples - where I'm pleased to see the Obama campaign has been shopping; The Sports Authority, which became a favorite of my sons. We started an early childhood learning center called Bright Horizons that Frist Lady Michelle Obama rightly praised" - Mitt Romney''s Acceptance speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention.

What did I do in the holidays?

I Slept... thats mostly it I slept the holidays away cause I had nothing better to do.

But

But

I did do something on the last week of the holidays, on the last week of the holidays I got a few new things to add to my room. I got a new mouse cause my other was dying and I needed a new one, this new one was a gaming mouse one with programable buttons which I feel makes my gaming much easier. A day later I got a nice desk for free, though the downside was that I had to clean the desk top to bottom, which I had no problem doing. the only real problem was getting it in through the door and to my room.

I think a day or 2 later I got a chair a office chair. I had borrowed mums chair from her cause the current chair I was using was giving me sore shoulders, so I used her chair in place of the other one till I got a new one, I got my new chair (Not really) from the eco shop. it was a office chair that was a nice blue colour, and like the desk I had to clean the chair down from top to bottom with soppy hot water the same as what I used for the desk to clean it.

In total I think it was worth it, I have a desk a chair and a new mouse that I really like. So I think the last week of the holidays went really well compared to the first week of the holidays where I did something stupid which led to me forgetting my passwords to one of my games and losing my account.... no worries though I can get it back soon near Christmas or before Christmas hopefully.

In the mean time I'll be playing the trial version of the game till further notice....

In the Dystopian Film The Hunger Games made by Gary Ross music is used substatially to suport Theme and Idea of Hope and Rebellion. This is demonstrated during Rue's Death through the minor cords which makes the audiance hold a sort of sadness for Rue's death. The Tempo of the soundtrack that is also playing during this scene is slowly revealing the emontion and grief to which Katniss is feeling. The dynamic of the music when this scene first starts is a soft quiet sound and builds up louder as the scene progresses through. The director did this to make the auidence feel some sort of connection to Katniss in an emotionally charged moment, where Katniss loses hope. This had wroked out well with the following scene after Rue's death where Distrct 11 goes into a Riot.

For the last week of school for term 3 in Social Studies, we've been working on a Prezi about our world.
For this Prezi, we were given a bunch of questions that we had to research to find information for this said Prezi. 

Make comments on what new information you gained from your research

I learned a few things from this small research project such as Christchurch was named after Christ church. I'd also learnt of Lyttleton's old name which was Port cooper before they decided to rename it Lyttelton.

What was the most interesting thing you found in your research?
The most interesting thing I learnt from this research was that if the British hadn't done the treaty of Waitangi in 1840 on February the 6th then the French would have Annexed New Zealand before the British.

What else do you think we should have added to the Prezi
Honestly, I'm not sure as I'd only finished so much and learning this much it's self was interesting for me. It was something nice to do on the last week of school.

In the scene at the train station, lighting and colour are used substantially to show the theme of 'rich vs poor' in this case, rich means the privileges given to those in the Capitol. This is demonstrated through the use of bright, cold, artificial lighting and a modern colour palette of whites and greys for the buildings and vibrant pinks and blues for the clothing This makes the audience feel like the location is modern and the citizens are excited for the tributes to arrive. The purpose of this was to show that the Capitol has the privilege of technology - They have electricity, trains and access to better clothing. This worked well with the use of costumes. The costumes of the Capitol are unique, exquisite and exotic which shows they have more variety and sewing technology than those of people in the district. This can be juxtaposed to the conditions in District 12 where there is no electrify and the colours and lighting are more natural.

In the reaping scene, Costumes are used effectively to show the theme of Rich v Poor.

We see this when the people of District 12 are waiting for someone to be chosen to represent their District. The lifestyle of District 12 is reflected in the clothes that they wear. These clothes are made of a limited material, they are dull and boring. This makes us understand that costumes represent the theme rich v poor, in the capitol and the Districts. There is a difference between the opportunity, power and privilege between District 12 and the Capitol. The director did this to make the audience understand how costumes can symbolise the inequality between the Capitol and the Districts. This symbolisms combined with a wide shot of the crowd in District 12 and an over the shoulder shot of Effie reveal the lack of opportunity in district 12 and the power of the capitol. This aspect can be contrasted to the character of Effie, she wears a bright pink outfit that has a lot of design behind it revealing the opportunities given to characters in the Capitol.

Reflection For Last Weeks PE II PE

Last week in PE the spots we had a play with was Netball, football and basketball.
I mainly focused on Netball as I had an understanding of the game because I played it back in primary school for winter sports.

I feel for teamwork in Netball was good, I was involved with everyone else and managed to have fun in Netball as when I was young and played it, it wasn't that fun because people were either taller than you or no one passed to you.
But I feel I did well in it.

I put myself in Level 4
because
I always have my PE gear and I'm always trying to get involved with others. and I'm making sure I'm always on task with my work.

The Themes of The Hunger Games II English

Themes are an important part of a film as it gives the director an idea of how they will direct the movie.
Some of the themes I noticed throughout The Hunger Games were

• Rich v Poor
• Hope and Rebellion
• Propaganda

Task - Find Quotes from characters in the film and explain why they are important in showing each theme. Present these in a creative way.

Katniss - How will they change you?
Peeta - I Don't know. Turn me into something I'm not. I just don't want to be another piece in their game, you know? 
This quote by mainly Peeta shows and portrays the theme of Propaganda. Propaganda can be seen as a way to control people to your bidding in large groups sort of like Manipulation. When Peeta says this, it shows that he's struggling in his role as a tribute for his district. In the hunger games, a tribute is a sort of like a district's hope Because if someone from said District wins the game it means that the district that person was from gets extra food for their entire district. But because the aim of the Hunger Games is to kill other opposing players from different districts and be the last standing Peeta's having a hard time coping with his role in the game because he's afraid that if he kills people he won't be the same person he was before he entered the games, and would turn into a pawn for the Capitol.

This quote by mainly President Snow shows us the theme of Hope & Rebellion It gives us an understanding of just how powerful hope is. Because we know the power hope has right from the start, hope can be given or seen in any situation whether it is life-threatening or not. A scene in the hunger games that harbours hope for the players is when Seneca talks of the coms and announces that any district that still has two people left in their district and are the last people standing will automatically make them the winners of the game and the game would end. This gave the players a sense of motivation and hope to continue on and win the game.

This quote may not seem it but it's hidden them is Hope & Rebellion but mainly Rebellion. In the middle start of the movie and near the ending it's shown that Katniss has a sense of rebelling which can be seen when she shoots the apple in the pig's mouth from down below when up above are judges from the Capitol and near the ending when Katniss cheats the system and decided that if She and Peeta can't both win then they'll leave the game with no winner. This quote may not seem like much to represent but during the tribute parade, Katniss is seen wearing all black and having wings of flames. In Katniss's district, it's seen that most of all the men are all Coal miners. The black of Katniss outfit representing the coal and the flames representing a spark to ignite the coal and in all ignite Katniss's.

Katniss Everdeen - Oh my God! is this real?
Gale Hawthrone - Better be. It cost me a squirrel.
This quote is a representation of the theme of Rich v Poor and gives us an idea of how poor the districts are, mainly District 12 in this case. In the movie, it is shown that money is rarely used and is only used for things such as cotton or little accessories, while the rest of the needed items someone may need to survive on is bought by trading what you already have for something else. In Gale's case, he traded a dead squirrel for a piece of bread, something which may not seem worth trading for in today's era, but its worth it to them as throughout the start of the movie we get a rundown on how District 12 looks and what the people wear, throughout that scene there is an old man sitting in a chair eating off any chicken that is left on the chicken bone. Nowadays we wouldn't really do that but in their case wasting food isn't an option as it's hard to come by and to obtain unless you have a skill in hunting.

Statement

In the Reaping scene in The Hunger Games, the idea of Rich v Poor is explained through the use of wide shots and close-ups. The comparison between the wealth of the Capitol, represented by Effie, and the poorness of District 12 is seen in the wide shot of the people gathered at the reaping. A close-up shot of Effie reveals quality, colourful make-up and costume. The wide shot of the crowd is used to show that they are forced to be there. This wide shot also shows a lack of colour in the population of District 12's material and costume to show they are poor.

In the movie, The Hunger Game, directed by Gary Ross, Close up shots are used effectively throughout the movie to show how the characters are feeling. For example, when a close-up shot of Katniss at the Tribute Parade is shown with her looking around constantly at a rapid pace. This makes us understand that Katniss is nervous with all the people who she's never seen in her life yelling and cheering at her and others who are present in the parade. The purpose of this is to show the aduiance just how nervous Katniss is about the whole thing. The director did this to give us a feeling on how Katniss felt about the parade and being in it. This worked well with the close up shots of the people in the crowd and a shot of Katniss's face on a banner so we can have a feeling of how she feels during the parade. This can be juxtaposed to the tribute parade in Catching fire where we get another close up shot of Katniss but instead of anoxuis or nervous she's sort of stern becuase she knows whats going on this time around.

Introduction (Intro)
During the 20th Century when World War 1 (1914 - 1918) and World War 2 (1939 - 1945) happened a
lot of the technology that we created and used had evolved over time. Some of the biggest changes
in technology were inventions made for war in the 20th Century. Some of these included Tanks,
Bombs, and Submarines. The side of technology that evolved during that time period which wasn’t war
based included. Television, (With Color) Microwaves, Spacecrafts and lastly Internet. Some of these
have changed to where they are no longer complicated looking and are  easier to understand and use
for our own benefit. Some of these objects have evolved over the time of our daily lives and changed
it for the best or for the worst.

Law
Most of the technological weapons that we use today started developing and improving themselves
in the 20th century during World War 1 & 2. Some of these weapons were Tanks, Submarines and guns.
Tanks were used by both sides of the war to shoot down enemies and buildings while also being
protected at the same time. Submarines were for underwater activities from out of eyesight, used to
strike down enemies on the sea from below them. Guns were used from behind the sandbags to
shoot across the field and shoot down incoming enemies. Most of these weapons are still used today
in the armies. One of them, the gun is used nowadays by not only the army but also the FBI and the
Police Force to help out and protect the citizens.

One of the most feared and said to be popular tanks in World War 2 was a tank made in 1942 by the
Germans. When a need for a new tank had become pressing when some of their men were trapped
in Stalingrad were in need of help.  The Panther tank  dealt devastating damage. One of Germany's top
Panther commanders was SS-Oberscharführer Ernst Barkmann. By the end of World war 2 he had
destroyed about 80 tanks with the Panther, truly showing how terrifying the tank itself is.

The USS Greyback, so called because it had a grey back, was used by the US in WW2. The Greyback was sunk during a bombing attack by  a Japanese naval bomber in February 1944 along with 80 of the crew who lived on the ship. Seventy-five years later on June 5th,  2019 the wreck of the submarine was rediscovered within Japan’s seas

While the war was going on other things that didn’t involve warfare were also created. Going from Cars,
TVs, and Microwaves, something that we all use in the 21st Century. The first Affordable car released
for purchase in the 20th Century which started its production in 1908 and was released for people in
America in 1927 was the Ford Model T made by the Ford Motor Company and went for the price of
$850. (Which is equivalent to $12,340.56 in 2020).
While in 1950 the Microwave or Microwave Oven was created by accident when a self-taught American
engineer by the name of Percy Spencer noticed that the Microwave he was creating was melting the
chocolate in his pocket from the Active Radar coming from the Microwave. Till this very day we still
use Microwaves but nowadays they're less complicated and easier to use and to understand.

Conclusion (Sum Up)
Most of the weapons we use today can be linked to weapons that were used in the past. Most of these weapons are still used in 2020 in the armies and now as well in the Police Force so they can protect the citizens.
Many of the things we have created in the 20th Century have improved to become better and stronger over time. People who create cars have started making electric cars so we don’t pollute the air anymore, and Tv’s are no longer small and now give us a more vivid and bigger view to look at. But even though so many things have changed and evolved over time these products till this very day are still evolving and improving for the better or worse for the future.

Reflection II English II Film Study

Over the last past few weeks in English, we've been focusing on Film Study and the movie The Hunger Games.
When we first started off the hunger games we watched the movie for fun
And the second time we watched it was for details for the Essay we would make on the film.
When we were watching the film for the second time for details we followed a theme. There were four themes that we followed

The first time we rewatched the movie for detail, we went over the difference between the Capitol and District 12. We also went over the reaping scene. For this, we had to add down what we saw, and what we heard.
(We used the theme Rich vs Poor for this)

The second time we watched the movies for details we did a comparison to the reaping scene and the interview at the start of the movie (Tribute Parade) we also added down what the three-finger salute meant in the movie. as well as some camera shots that may have been seen throughout the movie.

The third time we added the themes such as The Struggle For Power, The Power of Propaganda and Hope and Rebellion. we first started off by looking through the three themes, and adding down what we thought was hope or propaganda. We then looked through the quotes that were littered throughout the movie and wrote them down. we then did Hope and Rebellion itself and stuck down the moments that we remember where Katniss either rebelled or when Katniss and Petta experienced hope throughout the movie. and last but not least we looked at the Opening cards and the opening scene. For the Opening cards, we wrote down terms that related to the movie for E.g - Reaping - Where 1 girl and 1 boy are selected from each district to partake in The Hunger Games.
And then, at last, we looked through the opening scene which gave us a small history of the hunger games and a quote.

Hope & Rebellion 

Hope and Rebellion in The Hunger Games, isn't a much-seen theme but it's still there and it differently goes along with the story and makes up the characters and gives us an insight on things.
There are only a few times where we see hope, one's in the scene of the announcement the game master makes telling the contestants that if two people from the same district are alive then they can win. This gives the players a sense of hope to win the game.
Rebellion can also be seen a bit by katniss as she cheats the system at the near end of the game.

In The Hunger Games, Directed by Gary Ross, Costumes are used effectively to show the theme of Rich vs Poor. For example in the Capitol the costumes are very posh, they are neat, tidy, colourful even their dogs are coloured. The material is futuristic and this makes us understand that the Capitol is more advanced than District 12. The Director did this to create a contrast between the costumes, in District 12 the costumes are older, the materials used are natural and well worn. This difference shows that there are privileges to living in the Capitol.

What I think makes a successful paragraph

I think to make a successful paragraph you need to be able to make your statement clear on what you're talking about so people won't be confused and instantly turned off on reading what you've written. I also think it's a good idea to link back to your theme and to the start of your sentence.

PE Reflection II PE

For the last 2 weeks, we've been doing volleyball and learning all its actions and how to play it.
This week we've been doing a few rounds of volleyball in teams. starting off with a practice and then getting into a game. I feel that I'm getting better at my serving but could improve in my arm power in hitting the ball and learn to put more force when hitting the ball when it comes from above me.

Because I have been on task
I always have my PE uniform and always have the equipment I may need
I did my best to talk with my teammates even if I didn't get along with some of them and cheered them on for doing their best.
